El Clasico or in english, The Classic is the name given to a match between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona. The rivalry comes about because Madrid and Barcelona are the two largest cities in Spain. The two clubs are the richest, successful and influential in the world.
The rivalry was actually started as early as 1930s and mostly about politic. During the Francisco Franco dictatorship, most of citizens of Barcelona were in strong opposition to the regime. Barcelona also developed a reputation as a symbol of Catalan pride and identity, as opposed to the Madrid.
